Spanish football giant Real Madrid fired their coach Carlo Ancelotti on Monday as they finished the 2014-15 season without securing a major trophy.
“I would like to tell you that the board of directors has decided to relieve Carlo Ancelotti as the Real Madrid manager,” Real Madrid president Florentino Perez told a press conference at the club’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium, adding that it had been a “very difficult decision” for the board of directors.
Ancelotti had been popular among fans after leading Real to their 10th European Cup triumph last season. However, this year the club lost the Spanish La Liga title to Barcelona and failed to retain their Champions League trophy after they were defeated by Italian side Juventus in the semi-finals of this year’s competition.
The 55-year-old Ancelotti was the Madrid club’s eighth manager in only a decade.
“I urge you to look at the managers in other clubs like Barcelona or Atletico Madrid, two in Spain, or Chelsea, Bayern Munich or Juventus. You’ll see the manager’s spot is always changing,” Perez said in defense of the decision.
European press said Real’s decision to sack the Italian was ruthless but understandable for a club that accepts nothing but victory.
“It is very difficult to be the coach of Real Madrid as this is a club that always wants to win. They have to win La Liga or the Champions League every year. I am a little bit disappointed as Ancelotti is the best coach possible for Real Madrid,” said Frederic Hermel, a correspondent for the French sports newspaper L’Equipe.
Ancelotti’s successor will be announced next week with former Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez reportedly one of the favorites for the role.
